Windows Security Precautions | Safer Windows Operating System

The article is prepared for a standard windows user. It should not be considered professional.

Level of information: Beginner

Often one of the most popular questions at cybersecurity seminars, meetings and Q&A platforms; What can we do for a more secure windows?
Windows, one of the most well-known and known operating systems in the world, contains many security measures and software since it is already designed as a ready-made package. However, the way the windows operating system is used, the applications used, cracked and warez software, and various hardware factors can negatively affect the operating system.

What can be done for a more secure windows operating system?

# A licensed windows operating system

Using a genuine windows operating system automatically eliminates many negative factors that already exist. We can say that it directly prevents the formation of any back-door or negative code. Laptops bought from many technology markets are now delivered with windows license already available on computers. You can get the windows version you want, even with many programs installed.

The second article, as an article related to the use of licensed windows;
# Pay attention to the formatting process! Factory settings must be done professionally.

Resetting the operating system with USB or similar methods, which we know as formatting, must be done professionally.
Well, if you ask how is it to take a professional format :)
Windows operating system has many features such as recovery mode. You can access many features such as safe mode — restore factory settings from your device and perform a licensed reset and fix. Making a licensed installation is known as one of the most basic rules to keep your operating system safe.

# Do not turn off windows updates!

Unfortunately, it is something that many people do not like. Do not turn off updates for your Windows operating system. Windows regularly releases various updates to provide the necessary support to the operating system. Most of these updates are made for reasons such as security, software improvements, version control. A secure windows operating system must be kept up-to-date and checked frequently.

# Windows Defender

Do not turn off windows defender. Windows defender is a free antivirus and protection program provided by windows. Windows defender should be kept up to date and not turned off. If Windows defender is not to be preferred, a different and proven antivirus program should be preferred.

# Windows Account

Be sure to create a windows account. Your Windows account password must be a password containing symbols, numbers, uppercase and lowercase letters. Choosing mixed, strong passwords will provide a more secure space.

# System Files

Do not make changes to the system files of your Windows operating system unless you have to. Do not use different and unknown software. Do not resort to illegal means. Licensed and reliable sources will always be the safest way to proceed.

# Network Settings

Keep your network settings as standard and pay attention to your wifi security. Secure your wifi network with a stronger password by sharing it with as few people as possible. In some security protocols, even a wireless network may be preferred.

Another item that we can count as the most basic security steps of the windows operating system in a simple and practical way is the programs you will prefer in the windows operating system.

In my personal opinion, for a standard user, the security steps after this step should be examined under headings such as ‘’Safe Internet Usage’’’ — ‘’Secure Program Selection’’. For example; Choosing the right browser according to need, avoiding warez and cracked programs — websites visited for safe internet use are legal :)

By writing a more detailed article on safe internet use and safe computer use, I will explain the ways to make the windows operating system more secure in my other articles.
